For this modern accessory dwelling unit and photo studio, we executed a design that celebrates clean lines, abundant natural light, and functional versatility. Working with architectural plans that embraced contemporary aesthetics, we created a multi-purpose space that serves as both a comfortable living environment and a professional photography studio.

The dramatic shed roof design presented both opportunities and technical challenges that our team navigated with precision:

• We constructed the expansive shed roof with tongue and groove pine soffit, meticulously stained to enhance the natural wood grain while providing a warm contrast to the modern exterior

• Our framing design incorporated pocket headers throughout the structure to avoid thermal bridging, significantly improving energy efficiency without compromising structural integrity

• Strategic placement of large windows and clerestory elements maximizes natural light throughout the day—an essential feature for both the living space and photography studio

• The building envelope was meticulously sealed and insulated to ensure energy efficiency despite the generous glazing and ceiling height

Inside, we balanced modern aesthetics with practical functionality:

• The polished concrete floors represent one of the project's most striking features—a beautiful example of how structural elements can serve as finished surfaces. We carefully poured, ground, and stained the concrete on-site to achieve a sleek, durable surface that complements the contemporary design

• The open floor plan creates a sense of spaciousness that belies the actual dimensions of the structure, with defined areas for living and working that flow naturally into one another

• The bathroom offers a playful accent to the otherwise clean-lined space, featuring a mid-century modern vanity, fun lighting fixtures, and strategic pops of color that add personality while maintaining the overall modern aesthetic.

Client Education

During our preconstruction process, we worked closely with the client to explain the practical implications of different material choices. We discussed how various window placements would affect natural light throughout the day and seasons for their photography work.
We helped the client understand the benefits of our framing decisions, particularly how the pocket headers would create a more comfortable space by reducing cold spots near windows and doors while simultaneously lowering energy costs. Similarly, we explained how the stained concrete flooring would provide thermal mass that helps regulate temperature fluctuations.
